TONY’S SUGGESTIONS FOR BETTER NEW JERSEY LAWNS

When planting grass seed, use mixtures rather than pure seedings of one cultivar.  Mixtures of turf grass adjust better to a constantly changing environment.  Mixtures increase hardiness.

Lawns need light.  Some seed varieties do better than others in shade, but none do well.  Attempts to grow lawns in shady areas usually fail because of the effects of combined low light, root competition from woody plants and poor air movement that increase disease within the turf.

Apply weed and feed in mid spring when weeds begin to appear and temperatures are moderate.  Apply weed and feed onto a dampened lawn (early morning dew is best), when rain is not predicted for the next 24-48 hours.

Consider fall fertilization a must.  The fall is the time when turf grasses store reserves for winter.  Mid fall fertilization is the most important application of the year.

Lawn should be watered adequately or left unwatered so that adjustments to drought and dormancy will be made in a natural way.  More harm than good often results for light sprinkling of lawns during drought.

Limit traffic on newly planted lawns.  Resist the urge to mow new lawns until the new grass is at least 2” high.
